For fans of the popular manga and anime series The Quintessential Quintuplets, a new and unexpected journey has begun. Developer MAGES. has officially launched a free demo for their new dungeon-crawling RPG, The Quintessential Princesses: Fantasy, the Abyss, and the Magic Academy, in Japan. The demo, which went live on September 18, 2025, is available for download on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4, giving players a chance to experience the game’s unique blend of fantasy and romance before its full launch.

This new title is a major departure from the series’ previous visual novel games. Instead, it places the quintuplets—Ichika, Nino, Miku, Yotsuba, and Itsuki—and protagonist Futaro Uesugi in a brand new fantasy setting. The story is a reimagining of their original encounter, with the quintuplets as “problem princesses” and Futaro as a poor student at a prestigious magic academy. The demo covers the entirety of the game’s first chapter, allowing players to dive into the story, explore the dungeons, and get a feel for the game’s core mechanics. While save data from the demo will not transfer to the full game, it provides a crucial first look at a fresh take on the beloved franchise.

Gameplay: A Heart-Pounding Dungeon RPG

The core gameplay of The Quintessential Princesses is a first-person dungeon RPG. Players take on the role of Futaro, who must guide the quintuplets through various quests and dungeons. Unlike a traditional visual novel, the game is heavily focused on combat and character progression. Players can customize the equipment and magic of each of the five sisters, allowing for a deep level of party customization. The game promises a mix of dungeon exploration, item gathering, and turn-based battles against a variety of monsters. The goal of the quests is not only to acquire loot but also to unlock new story segments and character-specific storylines.

One of the most interesting aspects of the game is its promise of a “heart-pounding” experience, suggesting a focus on suspense and challenge. As a tutor, Futaro must work with the quintuplets to help them pass their exams and graduate, and their success depends on the player’s skill in battle and strategy. The game’s premise allows for a variety of new scenarios that were not possible in the original manga, giving both long-time fans and newcomers a fresh and exciting narrative to explore. The demo is a perfect opportunity to see how this unique blend of dungeon crawling and romance visual novel elements works in practice.

What to Expect from the Full Game

While the demo is a great appetizer, the full game, which also launched on September 18 in Japan, promises much more. The full release includes a variety of special editions, including a physical version for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, and a digital-only version for PlayStation 4. There is a limited edition that includes an original anime on Blu-ray, a soundtrack, and a special booklet. A more luxurious “Special Box” edition offers even more collectibles, including acrylic stands, tin badges, and a mini script. For those who can’t make it to a store, the demo is a great way to experience a piece of the game before committing to a purchase. It also gives players a chance to see the game’s stunning art and hear the fully voiced cast in action.

As of now, there is no official confirmation of a Western release for The Quintessential Princesses. However, given the massive popularity of the anime and manga in North America and Europe, a localization from a publisher like Aksys Games or NIS America is highly likely. For now, the free demo is the best way for international fans to get a taste of this new and exciting venture for the quintuplets. The academy doors are open, and a new adventure into the abyss awaits.
